You will soon notice that Algiers is a city brimming with energy. Nicknamed “the happy one”, it is the most populated city in the country with close to 2,400,000 inhabitants. Algiers is spread out over 1,190 km² and shows a great deal of diversity to curious visitors. From antique ruins to contemporary constructions, from small intimate streets to vast dynamic squares, come and discover this surprising and welcoming city thanks to Air France's many flights departing from the United States.
During your trip to Algiers, you will be turning back time and delving into a delicious world of spices and local markets - not forgetting past and present local art. You can start by discovering the old town, located on top of the hill, overlooking the modern districts. Begin your tour with the Notre-Dame d'Afrique basilica, finished in 1874. You will be welcomed by a beautiful Byzantine façade. Inside, you can admire the Hispano-Moorish architecture. Then, walk to Casbah through the typical little streets. This neighbourhood was built instead of the old Roman city, and is now classified as a UNESCO heritage site. There are many 17th and 18th century buildings there to marvel at. The Ketchaoua mosque will no doubt seduce you with its two slender minarets and surprising architecture - a clever mixture of Romano-Byzantine and Turkish-Arabic styles. The El Djedid mosque has an ovoid dome, surrounded by four other smaller ones. You will also get a glimpse of Jenina palace and Dar Aziza.
The Palais des Rais can also be explored. As the last testimony to Casbah's expansion towards the sea, it was initially built to strengthen military forces in the city during the 18th century. The building is divided into three palaces - each bearing a number: 17, 18 and 23. The most impressing is number 18 with its many frescos, wooden ceilings and blue ceramic tiling.
Two of the museums are must-sees: the famous Bardo with its rich prehistoric and antique collections, and the Fine Arts museum - the largest in Africa - with its 8,000 works of art. From there, you can loop back to Algiers' modern side of the city. The Test garden of Hamma is well worth a visit. Spread out over close to 32 hectares, it boasts a French garden and a large alley of plane trees with a beautiful lake, and the old garden with its tropical plants.
When discovering the modern district, do not miss out on the main Post Office. Built in 1910, it has a brilliant white and very elegant Moorish façade with two minarets. Push the large wooden doors open - and do not miss the old post boxes by the entrance. Inside, you will be quite simply blown away by the Hispano-Moorish style from Andalusia, and its golden domes. Pursue your visit with the Martyrs' Memorial, erected in 1982 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence. Three stylish palm leaves rise up 92 m high, symbolising the three main stages of the country's independence.
If you take a flight to Algiers as a family, you can take your children to one of the neighbouring theme parks: the Ben Aknoun zoological park, the Mohammadia attraction park or even the Bordj El Kiffan water park. There are also several beaches to relax on: El Kettani, Staoueli or the Aïn Benian Grand Rocher beach. You can easily travel to these sites, even though they are further out from the centre, by renting a vehicle when you arrive at Algiers' international airport - Houari Boumédiène.offers many direct flights to Paris departing from major US airports.
When you arrive at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airportyou can easily reach your hotel with the Super Shuttle, Air France buses, Citybird taxis or the Paris public transportation network (RER, metro, etc.).
You may reserve a flight for Paris or you may also reserve your flight + hotel and/or car rental when you reserve your ticket.
From May to October, you can wander around the Algerian street in the sun, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 30°C. There is very little rain during those months. The rest of the year, there is slightly more rain and temperatures can drop to 15°C.
