Fly off to Avignon
Set between the Rhône and Durance rivers, the Papal City of Avignon has a unique historical centre. You can marvel at the ramparts, the Doms Rock or the town's famous bridge after landing at the Avignon-Provence airport, located 8 km outside the centre. Once in town, you will find the city to be extremely dynamic, spread out over 64.78 km2, home to 92,000 inhabitants. It has a bit of everything - from architectural heritage to museums, from business centres (Saint-Charles, Economis) to lovely shops.
Discover Avignon
You will soon realise the town has two different faces. From the ultra-modern Nord shopping centre to the medieval Popes' Palace, the town has turned its diversity a charming asset. After your flight, you can quite easily reach the promenade out on the Doms Rock - a pleasant natural environment near the must-see Popes' Palace. As the largest Gothic palace in Europe, it will delve you back in history. There are 25 sites to see within it, including various cloisters and ceremonial rooms. Another key monument is the Saint-Bénézet bridge, on which you can have a little dance if you wish.
The town also boasts lots of parks and gardens, such as the Epicurium where local fruit and vegetables are grown, or the Ceccano garden with its media library.
The best way to visit Avignon is to walk along the lovely cobbled streets. In the Rue des Teinturiers for instance, you can catch a glimpse of old waterwheels in the Sorgue river. The Rue Peyrolerie will take you on a stroll under the rocks. During your visit, don't miss out on the city's many trompe l'oeil murals - in Rue Henri Fabre, Rue Jean Vilar and Rue de Mons for instance. Avignon can also be visited from the river. You could even cross over to Barthelass island on a reaction ferry or visit the town from a different angle thanks to the many cruises down the Rhône.
If you an art-lover, the town boasts several museums such as the Petit Palais, where the Renaissance's most famous artists are exhibited. If you are still looking for other sights to discover, why not visit the Sainte-Ruf Abbey, the Hôtel des Monnaires, the Pénitents Noirs Chapel, the Place de l'Horloge, Place du Crillon, the ramparts or even the Opera and its two statues of Molière.
For a more comprehensive visit, you could also go outside the city walls and travel to the Saint-André Fort - a unique architectural model in this region. Otherwise, a trip to the Pont du Gard bridge is also possible. It will take you 30 minutes to reach the famous aqueduct. To get there, do not hesitate to rent a vehicle, which can easily be done through a partner agency at the airport in Avignon.
The city is also an excellent starting point for discovering the Provence area. In addition to the Pont du Gard, you could go to Orange, Les Baux-de-Provence, Gordes or perhaps Châteauneuf-du-Pape and its renowned vineyards. To get all your senses roaring, have a wonder through the lavender fields in the neighbouring Lubéron hills.
