A trip to Brest

As Brittany's second largest city, Brest has lots of character. Close to 140,000 inhabitants are live there happily - in a city that is modern extremely modern and turned towards its rich past. Expanding over a surface area of 49.51 km², you will notice its futuristic bridge, famous ramparts and an oceanic city centre unique within Europe. For you to discover all this, Air France has lots of flights available to Brest. With departures from all main airports - New York, Washington, Houston, Boston or Los Angeles and San Francisco -, it will take you ten hours with a lay-over in Paris to reach the Brest-Bretagne airport, located only 10 km from the centre. You will then be free to explore Brest and its riches.

Discover Brest and its advantages

The city of Brest naturally attracts its visitors with its famous bay. Spread out over 180 km², this vast bay offers a unique panorama over the Iroise Sea - the part of the Atlantic Ocean located there. Wander through untouched nature along the marked paths or take a little boat out for a picnic on the islands - Round Island, the Island of the Dead and Arun Island. Portzic Fort bears testimony to important military heritage, as does the Landévennec boat graveyard.

You can then head back the centre of Brest, a city of art and history; the Iroise bridge will give you a last glimpse of the bay. Inaugurated in 1994, it will surprise you with its stylish design. Almost 800 metres long, you will cross over the Elorn and can thus admire this finely-shrouded structure. From up above, you can look down on the Albert Louppe bridge, its predecessor, reserved for pedestrians and bikes.

The port is also a lovely place for a stroll. Walk along the Commandant-Malbert dock and look out over a surprising panorama of the city and the many lighthouses along the coastline. You can also see admire the Recouvrance schooner there. This replica of an Aviso - a military boat only found in this region - will be inspiring. Nearby, the Abeille-Flandres tugboat is more modern. Did you enjoy the view of Brest from the dock? Then you will no doubt love the unique 360° view from the Capucins district. There you can also discover the old monumental workshops - which are former ship-building companies now turned into offices. Relax in the media library or national art centre in Rue Le Fourneau. To get back to that area, why not use the cable car - flying you across the Penfeld, the coastal river that crosses the city.

During your stay in Brest, you can also admire a few constructions dating back to Vauban's time. They are located in the Rue de Siam or Rue Louis Pasteur. You can also see the works of the military architect at the Château - now the Maritime Museum - and of course admire the many fortifications.

Continue your exploration of the city by visiting the Tanguy Tower, then move on to the Recouvrance district. There you will discover the oldest house in Brest - the Maison de la Fontaine. Then, head to the Explorers Garden and follow the history of all the great 18th-century maritime explorers.

Carry on your discovery of Brest by visiting the Océanopolis aquatic centre. Marine fauna can be observed in huge aquariums, and you can even spot a few seals in the clinic.

Lastly, before heading out of town settle down outside and enjoy some delicious crêpes - a symbolic dish in this region.

To complete your trip to Brest, feel free to rent a vehicle and drive through Brittany's countryside, discovering its most beautiful sights. Just 15 km away, Camaret-sur-Mer awaits you with its incredible rocky escarpment - Pen-Hir Point. Less than 20 km away, in Landerneau, the Garenne site can be visited - a renowned industrial site where you can discover the many places that made the town so famous. A hiking trail will take you too all the places worth seeing.

Saint-Pol-de-Léon - with its cathedral and Renaissance houses - and Quimper with its Bishop's House, cathedral and timbered houses and only about fifty kilometres away too.offers many direct flights to Paris departing from major US airports.

When you arrive at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airportyou can easily reach your hotel with the Super Shuttle, Air France buses, Citybird taxis or the Paris public transportation network (RER, metro, etc.).

You may reserve a flight for Paris or you may also reserve your flight + hotel and/or car rental when you reserve your ticket.

Preparing your stay in Brest

You will most enjoy strolling through the streets of Brest during the summer. Temperatures are pleasant and there is less rain - we all know how Brittany is notoriously known for its rainy weather! You can therefore enjoy the city and its bay. Winter months are also nice - though cloudier, adding a touch of mystery to the city.
