This fortified abbey on a tidal island is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Although France boasts thousands of castles, the most famous by far are those situated in the Loire Valley. Their stunning architectural designs and exquisitely landscaped grounds were some of the finest creations of Renaissance Europe and they find their supreme expression in castles like Chambord, Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau. In contrast, France’s most beautiful churches, its Gothic cathedrals, are concentrated further north. The majestic cathedrals of Amiens, Chartres, Reims, Strasbourg are some of France’s greatest gifts to the world.
