Welcome to Toulouse, the pink city
With nearly 450,000 inhabitants, Toulouse is the regional center for the Midi-Pyrénées and the 4th largest city in France.
Although the territory was already inhabited during the Paleolithic era, the city of Tolosa (Toulouse's former name) was not founded until about the 2nd century BC. The capital of the Narbonnaise region during Gallo-Roman times, it was established on Toulouse's current historical center. Toulouse was a Cathar center and one of the cities where the heresy was the most influential and therefore repressed with the creation of the Order of the Frères Prêcheurs, also called the Dominicans. The city then grew steadily thanks to trade and industrial activities (the pastel industry).
The architecture in Toulouse is characteristic of cities in this part of southern France. The terra cotta bricks used to construct the buildings gave the city the nickname of the “pink city”. Toulouse is listed as a “Grand site de Midi-Pyrénées”, the starting point of the famous Canal du Midi, on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
The city of Toulouse was famous for growing violets during the 19th century and developed its industrial sector to become a European techno-pole for many companies specialized in the aeronautic and aerospatial industry.
From a cultural point of view, Toulouse has renowned institutions such as the Capitol Theater, the Halle aux Grains (auditorium), the Cité TNT theater, the Garonne Theater, etc. Its university is one of the oldest in France and was founded during the Middle Ages (1229). Finally, Toulouse is also famous for its rugby team, the “Stade Toulousain” that has won several French and European championships. Toulouse is a city with a strong identity: you will be won-over by its charm!
