What to do in Yerevan?
Founded in the eighth century, Yerevan has had a turbulent history and the city has experienced cultural influences from Persia, Syria, Turkey. For most of the twentieth century, Armenia was part of the Soviet Union, which significantly impacted its culture and architecture. In Yerevan, you will see numerous vestiges of the Soviet times. You will also find signs of a strong Christian presence; Armenia is one of the earliest adepts of Christianity. You can visit ruins of some of the churches from the 4th, 5th centuries just outside Yerevan. Though some of Yerevan's oldest Christian architecture was destroyed during the Soviet times, you will still find some beautiful churches in the city, like the 18th century Saint John the Baptist Church.
In Yerevan, enjoy the hearty local cuisine that has been largely shaped by Levantine and Persian influences, the excellent kebabs, manti (tiny dumplings) and lentil soup are some of the delicious local specialties.
Make sure to visit the National Gallery of Armenia, the History Museum of Armenia and the Armenian Genocide Museum that revisits one of the darkest periods in the history of Armenia. Though the city has been largely rebuilt since the 2000s, you will still find some of the remnants of the old city, poetic 19th century architecture and buildings from the Soviet times.
