Florence, an open-air museum

Air France offers flights to Florence, capital of Tuscany, in the north of Italy.

Florence is an average size city (population 371,000), but very touristic because it is a genuine open-air museum. Florence was also the capital of the Italian kingdom until 1871, the date when the country was unified. Florence lost its tenure as capital to the benefit of Rome.

Florence was founded during the Roman Empire, in 59 BC. The city flourished during the Renaissance under the authority of the Medici family who was omnipresent in the city. The family played a dominant role in culture, economics and politics. Many palaces bear witness to their influence, making the city so appealing today. The Arno River crosses Florence and is spanned by the famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge which is lined with shops and is one of the city's symbols.

Florence alone holds a very large portion of Italy's works of art, perhaps even in the world! Wasn't Florence the birthplace of artists and geniuses such as Giotto, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Dante and Machiavelli?

Florence is even more appealing since it has very few modern buildings and no suburbs. As soon as you leave the city, you are in the lush countryside of Tuscany.

Florence: magnificent palaces and churches to visit

As you can see, Florence has a quantity of palaces, bridges and churches to visit. To mention only a few, you can start your visit with the Piazza della Signoria which was a vast thermal establishment under the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the medieval quarter with its houses, then the city's political center with the Palazzo Signoria. You can admire the buildings that surround the square, in particular the Loggia dei Lanzi. The Palazzo Vecchio is also worth the trip, both for its exterior and its interior, which houses many treasures. The same for the Orsanmichele Church, former oratory built in 750, transformed into a loggia then again into a church.

You must take the time to visit the Uffizi Gallery which includes famous paintings by Botticelli.

You won't want to miss the Florence Cathedral either, with the adjacent baptistery, built during the 14th-15th centuries, located on the Piazza del Duomo. And of course, take a walk over the Ponte Vecchio, on the Arno River. The city has many other bridges too: the Ponte Santa Trinita, the Ponte alle Grazi, the Ponte alla Carraia, etc.
