What are some of the best things to do in Milan?

In addition to being Italy's business center, Milan has a thriving cultural scene, with world-renowned contemporary art museums, galleries and exhibition spaces. In the capital of the Lombardy, the old mixes with the new, and the traditional meets the innovative.

  • From the imposing Castello Sforzesco, walk towards the Piazza del Duomo. The Castello is a medieval fortress, built between the 14th and the 15th centuries that now houses museums and art collections.
  • At the grand Piazza del Duomo, admire the craftsmanship of the legendary cathedral, taking note of the quirky reliefs decorating the elegant facade. Then roam under the high ceilings of the 19th-century shopping venue Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle II and sit down for an espresso in one of its bars. Just around the corner is the famous Alla Scala – stop by and check the program.
  • Enjoy the great art. In Milan, Renaissance masterpieces are to be found at the Pinacoteca di Brera and Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. At the small church Santa Maria delle Grazie, you will have a chance to see Leonardo da Vinci's transcendent Last Supper. Apart from museums with classical art, Milan offers a number of contemporary art and design exhibition spaces, foundations and galleries, like Fondazione Prada or the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca.
  • A world-famous fashion destination, Milan is a great place to shop. To get a glimpse of designer novelties, go to to via Montenapoleone with its many boutiques, or explore the city's many vintage shops – they truly have a lot to offer.
  • Head to Navigli for an aperetivo and spend your evening at the canals. Ask for a table at one of the many terraces along the canal and indulge in some people watching.
