When is the best time to visit Cairo?

Egypt has a desert climate, and the weather in Cairo is usually either warm or hot during the day and cold or cool during the night. There are two distinct seasons here – a very hot summer, with average temperatures well above 30°C that lasts between May and October. The winter is mild, lasting from November to April. Due to Cairo's location by the Nile River, humidity levels here are high, despite sparse rains. In March and April, occasional dust storms occur. Winter months between November and April are the best time to visit Cairo – then the temperatures average between 19°C and 29°C during the day, falling lower during the night.

How to get to the center of Cairo from the airport?

Cairo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Egypt, is located 22km away from the city center. To get from the airport to Cairo's downtown, hail a taxi or use a bus. Taxi stands are located outside the Terminals 1,2 and 3, and a taxi ride to the center takes about 26 minutes. The bus stop is located at Terminal 1, and a bus ride takes around 50 minutes.

What are some of the best things to do in Cairo?

  • Admire the ancient pyramids. The world-famous Giza pyramids are located just outside the city. If you crave a quieter experience, make sure to go to the less popular but even older Djoser pyramids, built in the 27th century BC. Learn more about the culture and history of the ancient Egypt at the Egyptian Museum, containing mummies and artefacts, some of which are 4 thousand years old.
  • Explore the city's grand mosques. The ninth-century Ibn Tulun Mosque is open to tourists every day except Fridays. Here, you climb onto the roof and up the minaret for a majestic view of the neighborhood and the city's old Islamic part. Marvel at the Blue Mosque with its beautiful albeit crumbling blue tiles.
  • Enjoy the Egyptian koshary, the delicious concoction made of macaroni, lentils, onions and chickpeas. And make sure to stop for a falafel sandwich at one of the city's many fast-food stalls.
